When VA Form 21-526EZ is the right form — and when it isn’t.
This is the form you need if…
- You have a current diagnosis you believe is connected to your service and have never claimed it.
- A service-connected condition has gotten worse and your rating no longer reflects it.
- A new condition was caused or aggravated by one that's already service-connected — a secondary claim.

- You disagree with a decision VA already made. That's a review — a Supplemental Claim (20-0995), a Higher-Level Review (20-0996) or a Board appeal (10182) — not a new 526EZ.
- You want to preserve an effective date but aren't ready to file. Submit an Intent to File (21-0966) instead; it holds the date for a year while you gather evidence.
- You are claiming pension, survivor benefits or education benefits. Those are different programs on different forms.

Protect the effective date first

Gather the evidence before you file, not after
Service treatment records, private records or a 21-4142 for each provider, your personal statement, buddy statements, and a nexus letter where the connection isn't obvious. A Fully Developed Claim needs all of it at submission.
List each condition specifically
"Lumbar strain with radiating pain to the left leg", not "back". Name the body part, the side, and the diagnosis if you have one. Each line becomes a separate decision, and vague lines produce vague decisions.
Say how each condition relates to service
For each line the form asks how it's connected: an in-service injury or event, a condition secondary to one already rated, exposure, or aggravation of something pre-existing. This is the theory of your claim — get it right here.

Certify FDC only if you truly have nothing more to send; otherwise file standard and let VA develop. Sign, date, and keep a copy of everything you submitted.

Filing before the evidence exists
A claim with no supporting evidence gets a C&P exam and a decision on that exam alone. Gathering the record first — or at least filing an Intent to File and then gathering — produces a better decision on the same effective date.

Claiming symptoms instead of conditions
"Pain", "trouble sleeping" and "anxiety" are symptoms. VA rates diagnoses. Get the diagnosis on paper before you list it.

Missing the secondary conditions
The depression that came with chronic pain, the sleep apnea alongside PTSD, the hip that compensated for the bad knee — each is a separate line, and each is missed constantly.

Certifying Fully Developed when it isn't
If VA has to develop evidence anyway, the FDC certification is set aside and the claim is processed as standard. Nothing is lost except the expectation.
