Straight answers
A C-File (Claims File) is the complete record the VA maintains on your disability claims. It includes your service treatment records, VA medical records, exam results, decision letters, and all evidence submitted for your claims. It can be hundreds or thousands of pages long.
Submit VA Form 20-10206 (Freedom of Information Act or Privacy Act Request) and check the CLAIMS FILE (C-FILE) box in Section III. You can send it through VA.gov, by fax, or by mail to the Evidence Intake Center. Plan on three to six months. Our step-by-step guide at veteranai.co/how-to-get-your-c-file walks the form box by box.
Veterans typically discover 15+ claimable items in their C-File analysis. This includes primary conditions they didn't know were documented, secondary conditions linked to existing ratings, and evidence supporting rating increases for current claims.
Secondary conditions are disabilities caused or aggravated by a service-connected condition. For example, if you have service-connected knee pain that changes your gait, you may develop hip or back problems as secondary conditions. These are often overlooked but can significantly increase your total rating.
Most C-File analyses complete within 24-48 hours, depending on the size of your file. Larger files with thousands of pages may take slightly longer. You'll receive a notification when your analysis is ready.
