For three months after initial diagnosis
- 0%
Thereafter, evaluate chronic residuals, such as nephrolithiasis (kidney stones), cataracts, decreased renal function, and congestive heart failure under the appropriate diagnostic codes.
Hypoparathyroidism (VA Diagnostic Code 7905)
Understanding Your VA Disability Rating for Hypoparathyroidism
Hypoparathyroidism is a condition of the endocrine system. The VA rates it under Diagnostic Code 7905, found in 38 CFR § 4.119.
Available Rating Levels
The VA uses a two-stage approach when rating hypoparathyroidism:
100% Rating
A 100% rating is assigned for three months after initial diagnosis.
0% Rating
Thereafter, the VA evaluates the chronic residuals of the condition under the appropriate diagnostic codes. These residuals may include:
- Nephrolithiasis (kidney stones)
- Cataracts
- Decreased renal function
- Congestive heart failure
What the VA Looks For
When rating hypoparathyroidism, the VA considers:
- The date of initial diagnosis, since the 100% rating applies for the first three months following diagnosis.
- The chronic residuals of the condition after that initial period. Rather than rating hypoparathyroidism itself at a set level beyond three months, the VA evaluates any lasting effects — such as kidney stones, cataracts, decreased renal function, or congestive heart failure — under the diagnostic codes that specifically apply to those conditions.
This information is drawn directly from the VA rating schedule under 38 CFR § 4.119, Diagnostic Code 7905, for the endocrine system.
These criteria are a rendering of § 4.119, diagnostic code 7905. The official version is the one that governs your rating.

Knowing the criteria is the first half. Getting your file to show them is the second.
Find your level in the stack
Read each rung against what your medical records already say. The level your records document today is the one the VA can support today.
Name the gap
Look at the rung above yours and write down exactly what it asks for that your file does not show yet — a diagnosis, a measurement, a prescribed brace, a doctor’s opinion linking it to service.
Claim it by code
File under diagnostic code 7905 and attach the evidence for the level you are asking for. Other Endocrine System codes may cover your secondary conditions.
