VA Disability Rating: Papulosquamous Disorders (Diagnostic Code 7822)
Understanding the Condition
Papulosquamous disorders are a group of skin conditions that are not listed elsewhere in the VA rating schedule. Under Diagnostic Code 7822, this category includes conditions such as:
- Lichen planus
- Large or small plaque parapsoriasis
- Pityriasis lichenoides et varioliformis acuta (PLEVA)
- Lymphomatoid papulosis
- Mycosis fungoides
- Pityriasis rubra pilaris (PRP)
These conditions affect the skin body system and are evaluated under § 4.118 using the General Rating Formula for the Skin.
Available Rating Levels
The VA assigns a disability rating based on the type and intensity of treatment your condition has required. The available rating levels for Diagnostic Code 7822 are:
| Rating | What It Reflects |
|---|---|
| 60% | Constant or near-constant systemic therapy — including, but not limited to, corticosteroids, phototherapy, retinoids, biologics, photochemotherapy, psoralen with long-wave ultraviolet-A light (PUVA), or other immunosuppressive drugs — required over the past 12-month period. Met when at least one of the listed criteria applies. |
| 30% | Assigned when at least one of the applicable criteria for this level is met. |
| 10% | Assigned when at least one of the applicable criteria for this level is met. |
| 0% | No more than topical therapy required over the past 12-month period, and at least one of the applicable criteria is met. |
What the VA Looks For
When rating papulosquamous disorders under Diagnostic Code 7822, the VA focuses on the type of treatment required over the past 12-month period. In particular, the VA considers:
- Whether systemic therapy is needed — such as corticosteroids, phototherapy, retinoids, biologics, photochemotherapy, PUVA, or other immunosuppressive drugs — and how frequently it is required (for example, constant or near-constant use points toward the 60% level).
- Whether only topical therapy has been needed — the 0% level reflects situations where no more than topical therapy was required over the past 12-month period.
Each rating level requires that at least one of its applicable criteria be met. Because the evaluation looks back over a 12-month period, documentation of your treatment history is central to how this condition is rated.
These criteria are a rendering of § 4.118, diagnostic code 7822. The official version is the one that governs your rating.

Read each rung against what your medical records already say. The level your records document today is the one the VA can support today.
Name the gap
Look at the rung above yours and write down exactly what it asks for that your file does not show yet — a diagnosis, a measurement, a prescribed brace, a doctor’s opinion linking it to service.
