These notes are part of the regulation. They change how the levels above are applied.
- Note: When evaluating any claim involving loss or loss of use of one or more creative organs, refer to § 3.350 of this chapter to determine whether the veteran may be entitled to special monthly compensation. Kidney and Urinary Stones (Nephrolithiasis / Ureterolithiasis / Nephrocalcinosis)
VA Diagnostic Code 7508 · Genitourinary System · 38 CFR § 4.115b
What This Condition Is
This rating entry covers kidney and urinary tract stone conditions, including:
- Nephrolithiasis — stones that form in the kidneys
- Ureterolithiasis — stones in the ureters (the tubes connecting the kidneys to the bladder)
- Nephrocalcinosis — calcium deposits in the kidney tissue
These are conditions of the genitourinary system, which the VA evaluates under § 4.115b of the rating schedule.
How the VA Rates It
For Diagnostic Code 7508, the VA generally rates these stone conditions as hydronephrosis, meaning the criteria used for hydronephrosis are applied to determine the appropriate evaluation.
There is one specific rating level identified for this code:
| Rating | What It Reflects |
|---|---|
| 30% | Recurrent stone formation requiring invasive or non-invasive procedures more than two times per year |
In other words, a 30% evaluation is available where stones keep forming and require invasive or non-invasive procedures more than two times per year. Outside of that circumstance, the condition is rated as hydronephrosis.
What the VA Looks For
When evaluating a claim under this code, the VA considers:
- Whether the condition involves recurrent stone formation
- Whether those recurring stones require invasive or non-invasive procedures
- How often such procedures are needed — specifically, whether they occur more than two times per year
- Otherwise, application of the hydronephrosis rating criteria
Additional Note
When evaluating any claim involving loss or loss of use of one or more creative organs, the VA refers to § 3.350 of this chapter to determine whether the veteran may be entitled to special monthly compensation. Footnotes in the schedule indicate conditions that potentially establish entitlement to special monthly compensation; however, there are other conditions in this section which, under certain circumstances, also establish entitlement to special monthly compensation.

Knowing the criteria is the first half. Getting your file to show them is the second.
Find your level in the stack
Read each rung against what your medical records already say. The level your records document today is the one the VA can support today.
Name the gap
Look at the rung above yours and write down exactly what it asks for that your file does not show yet — a diagnosis, a measurement, a prescribed brace, a doctor’s opinion linking it to service.
Claim it by code
File under diagnostic code 7508 and attach the evidence for the level you are asking for. Other Genitourinary System codes may cover your secondary conditions.
