These notes are part of the regulation. They change how the levels above are applied.
- Note: Rate residuals of cholera and non-cholera vibrio infections, such as renal failure, skin, and musculoskeletal conditions, within the appropriate body system.
Vibriosis (Cholera, Non-cholera) — VA Disability Rating (Diagnostic Code 6300)
Body System: Infectious Diseases, Immune Disorders and Nutritional Deficiencies Regulation: 38 CFR § 4.88b, Diagnostic Code 6300 Rated Under: General Rating Formula for Infectious Diseases
What This Condition Is
Vibriosis refers to infections caused by Vibrio bacteria, including both cholera and non-cholera vibrio infections. Under the VA rating system, these infections are addressed under Diagnostic Code 6300, using the General Rating Formula for Infectious Diseases.
Because a vibrio infection can affect the body in different ways, the VA also considers residuals — the lasting effects that remain after the active infection. According to the rating note:
Rate residuals of cholera and non-cholera vibrio infections, such as renal failure, skin, and musculoskeletal conditions, within the appropriate body system.
This means that any lingering conditions (for example, effects on the kidneys, skin, or muscles and bones) may be evaluated separately under the body system that best fits those specific residuals.
Available Rating Levels
The rating you receive depends on whether the disease is currently active and, once active disease resolves, on the nature and severity of any remaining symptoms or residuals.
While the Disease Is Active
- 100% — For active disease.
When the infection is active, it may be rated as fully disabling. After the active phase, the VA evaluates any residual conditions under the appropriate body system as described in the note above.
What the VA Looks For
When evaluating vibriosis, the VA focuses on:
- Whether the disease is currently active. Active disease may support the 100% level.
- Which residuals remain after the active infection resolves. The rating note directs that residuals — including renal (kidney) failure, skin conditions, and musculoskeletal conditions — be rated within the appropriate body system rather than solely under Diagnostic Code 6300.
- A confirmed diagnosis of a cholera or non-cholera vibrio infection.
Because residuals are rated within their own body systems, the overall evaluation of vibriosis may involve more than one part of the VA rating schedule, depending on how the infection has affected the body.

Knowing the criteria is the first half. Getting your file to show them is the second.
Find your level in the stack
Read each rung against what your medical records already say. The level your records document today is the one the VA can support today.
Name the gap
Look at the rung above yours and write down exactly what it asks for that your file does not show yet — a diagnosis, a measurement, a prescribed brace, a doctor’s opinion linking it to service.
Claim it by code
File under diagnostic code 6300 and attach the evidence for the level you are asking for. Other Infectious Diseases, Immune Disorders and Nutritional Deficiencies codes may cover your secondary conditions.
