VA Disability Rating: Light Perception Only in One Eye (Diagnostic Code 6064)
Body System: Organs of Special Sense (Eye) Regulation: 38 CFR § 4.79
Understanding This Condition
Diagnostic Code 6064 applies when a veteran has no more than light perception in one eye — meaning the affected eye can, at most, detect the presence of light but provides little to no functional vision beyond that.
Because vision loss affects both eyes together in daily life, the VA rates this condition by looking at how well the other (better) eye sees. The worse your vision in the other eye, the higher the disability rating.
Available Rating Levels
Your rating depends on the visual acuity measured in your other eye:
| Rating | Vision in the Other Eye |
|---|---|
| 100% | 5/200 (1.5/60) |
| 90% | 10/200 (3/60) |
| 80% | 15/200 (4.5/60) |
| 70% | 20/200 (6/60) |
| 60% | 20/100 (6/30) |
| 50% | 20/70 (6/21) |
| 40% | 20/50 (6/15) |
| 30% | 20/40 (6/12) |
What the VA Looks For
When rating this condition, the VA focuses on:
- Light perception in the affected eye — confirming that vision is no better than the ability to perceive light.
- Measured visual acuity in the other eye — this is the primary factor that determines which rating level applies, according to the scale above.
Additional Consideration
The rating criteria note that cases under this code should also be reviewed for entitlement to Special Monthly Compensation (SMC) under 38 CFR § 3.350. SMC is a separate consideration that may apply in certain circumstances.

Knowing the criteria is the first half. Getting your file to show them is the second.
Find your level in the stack
Read each rung against what your medical records already say. The level your records document today is the one the VA can support today.
Name the gap
Look at the rung above yours and write down exactly what it asks for that your file does not show yet — a diagnosis, a measurement, a prescribed brace, a doctor’s opinion linking it to service.
Claim it by code
File under diagnostic code 6064 and attach the evidence for the level you are asking for. Other Organs of Special Sense (Eye) codes may cover your secondary conditions.
