## Understanding Neuritis

Neuritis is a condition affecting the nerves. Under the VA rating schedule, Diagnostic Code 8627 covers neuritis and is evaluated by comparison to the criteria used for **Paralysis of (Diagnostic Code 8527)**.

Because neuritis is rated by analogy, the VA applies the standards for that related nerve condition when assigning a disability percentage.

## What the VA Looks For

When evaluating neuritis under Diagnostic Code 8627, the VA considers whether the condition shows **organic changes**. Under § 4.123, these organic changes include:

- Constant pain, at times excruciating

The presence or absence of these organic changes affects how the condition may be rated:

- **Without organic changes:** Neuritis is rated at a maximum of **moderate incomplete paralysis**.
- **With organic changes:** Neuritis may be rated up to **severe incomplete paralysis**.
