## Notes

- Note: Combined nerve injuries should be rated by reference to the major involvement, or if sufficient in extent, consider radicular group ratings.
- Rated by analogy to Paralysis of: (DC 8513). Per § 4.123, neuritis not characterized by organic changes (loss of reflexes, muscle atrophy, sensory disturbances, and constant pain, at times excruciating) is rated at a maximum of moderate incomplete paralysis; with such organic changes it may be rated up to severe incomplete paralysis.

# Neuritis (Diagnostic Code 8613)

## Understanding This Rating

Neuritis is a neurological condition rated under Diagnostic Code 8613. Because it falls within the group of conditions affecting the nerves, the VA does not use a standalone set of criteria for it. Instead, neuritis is **rated by analogy to Paralysis** under Diagnostic Code 8513.

This means the VA evaluates how the condition affects nerve function and assigns a rating level that mirrors the corresponding degree of paralysis.

## Available Rating Levels

The VA rates neuritis under DC 8513 using the following levels. Ratings can differ depending on whether the affected extremity is dominant or non-dominant.

| **40%** | Incomplete: Moderate | 30% |
| **20%** | Incomplete: Mild | 20% |

## What the VA Looks For

When rating neuritis, the VA considers the presence or absence of **organic changes**, which include:

- Loss of reflexes
- Muscle atrophy
- Sensory disturbances
- Constant pain, at times excruciating

**How this affects the rating (per § 4.123):**

- **Without organic changes:** Neuritis that is *not* characterized by these organic changes is rated at a **maximum of moderate incomplete paralysis**.
- **With organic changes:** When these organic changes are present, neuritis **may be rated up to severe incomplete paralysis**.

## Important Notes

- **Combined nerve injuries** should be rated by reference to the major involvement. If the involvement is sufficient in extent, the VA may consider **radicular group ratings**.
