## Notes

- Note: It is required for the minimum ratings for residuals under diagnostic codes 8000-8025, that there be ascertainable residuals. Determinations as to the presence of residuals not capable of objective verification, i.e., headaches, dizziness, fatigability, must be approached on the basis of the diagnosis recorded; subjective residuals will be accepted when consistent with the disease and not more likely attributable to other disease or no disease. It is of exceptional importance that when ratings in excess of the prescribed minimum ratings are assigned, the diagnostic codes utilized as bases of evaluation be cited, in addition to the codes identifying the diagnoses.

## What This Condition Is

VA Diagnostic Code **8007** covers an **embolism of the brain vessels** — a condition affecting the blood vessels of the brain. It is evaluated under the neurological section of the VA rating schedule (§ 4.124a).

## Available Rating Levels

The VA rating schedule assigns the following levels for this condition:

| Rating | What It Reflects |
|--------|------------------|
| **100%** | The vascular condition is rated at 100% for **6 months** (this applies to conditions under Codes 8007 through 8009). |
| **10%** | After that period, **residuals** are rated — with **10% as the minimum**. |

In other words, the condition begins at a 100% evaluation for a set 6-month period, and thereafter the VA rates the lasting effects (residuals), with 10% being the minimum rating.

## What the VA Looks For

- **Ascertainable residuals are required.** For the minimum ratings for residuals under diagnostic codes 8000–8025, there must be residuals that can be identified.
- **Subjective symptoms are considered on the basis of the recorded diagnosis.** Residuals not capable of objective verification — such as **headaches, dizziness, and fatigability** — are approached based on the diagnosis on record.
