## Notes

- Note: Rate under the appropriate body system any residual disability of infection, which includes, but is not limited to, conditions of the central nervous system, liver, or kidney.

# Hemorrhagic Fevers (VA Diagnostic Code 6329)

*Includes dengue, yellow fever, and other hemorrhagic fevers*

**Body System:** Infectious Diseases, Immune Disorders and Nutritional Deficiencies
**Regulation:** 38 CFR § 4.88b — General Rating Formula for Infectious Diseases

---

## What This Condition Is

Diagnostic Code 6329 covers hemorrhagic fevers, a group of infectious diseases that includes dengue, yellow fever, and others. Under the VA rating schedule, this condition is evaluated using the **General Rating Formula for Infectious Diseases**.

Because an infection can leave lasting effects on the body, the VA also accounts for any residual disability that remains after the active infection.

---

## Available Rating Levels

The VA assigns a disability rating for hemorrhagic fevers based primarily on whether the disease is active, along with the severity and frequency of symptoms. The rating levels associated with this code include:

| Rating | What It Reflects |
|--------|------------------|
| **100%** | For active disease. |
| **0%** | As acute or asymptomatic chronic disease. |

Ratings are also available for symptom patterns described in the general formula, such as symptoms that:

- **100%** — Are nearly constant and so severe as to restrict routine daily activities almost completely, and which may occasionally preclude self-care.
- **60%** — Are nearly constant and restrict routine daily activities to less than 50 percent of the pre-illness level; **or** which wax and wane, resulting in periods of incapacitation of at least six weeks total duration per year.
- **40%** — Are nearly constant and restrict routine daily activities from 50 to 75 percent of the pre-illness level; **or** which wax and wane, resulting in periods of incapacitation of at least four but less than six weeks total duration per year.
- **20%** — Are nearly constant and restrict routine daily activities by less than 25 percent of the pre-illness level; **or** which wax and wane, resulting in periods of incapacitation of at least two but less than four weeks total duration per year.
- **10%** — Wax and wane but result in periods of incapacitation of at least one but less than two weeks total duration per year; **or** symptoms controlled by continuous medication.

---

## What the VA Looks For

When rating hemorrhagic fevers, the VA considers:

- **Whether the disease is active.** Active disease is rated at 100%, while acute or asymptomatic chronic disease is rated at 0%.
- **How constant the symptoms are.** The formula distinguishes between symptoms that are nearly constant and those that wax and wane.
- **How much daily life is affected.** The VA measures the degree to which routine daily activities are restricted compared to the pre-illness level.
- **Periods of incapacitation.** The total duration of incapacitation over a year is a key factor in the wax-and-wane categories.
- **Use of continuous medication.** Symptoms controlled by continuous medication are recognized at the 10% level.

### Residual Effects

**Note:** Any residual disability of the infection is rated under the appropriate body system. This includes, but is not limited to, conditions of the central nervous system, liver, or kidney.
