## Notes

- Note 1: Continue the rating of 100 percent for the duration of treatment for active disease followed by a mandatory VA exam. If there is no relapse, rate on residuals. - Note 2: Confirm the recurrence of active infection by culture, histopathology, or other diagnostic laboratory testing.

## Understanding This Condition

Nontuberculosis mycobacterium infection is an infectious disease evaluated by the VA under Diagnostic Code 6312. Because the impact of this condition can change over time, the VA rating approach accounts for two distinct phases: the period of **active disease** and the period afterward, when any lasting effects (residuals) are evaluated.

## What the VA Looks For

When rating this condition, the VA considers the following:

- **Duration of the 100% rating.** The 100 percent evaluation continues for the duration of treatment for active disease. This is followed by a **mandatory VA examination**. If there is no relapse, the condition is then rated on its residuals. Any change in evaluation based on that examination — or any subsequent examination — is subject to the provisions of § 3.105(e).

- **Confirming recurrence.** A recurrence of active infection is confirmed by **culture, histopathology, or other diagnostic laboratory testing.**

- **Rating residual disability.** Any residual disability from the infection is rated under the appropriate body system. Residuals include, but are not limited to, **skin conditions** and conditions of the **respiratory, central nervous, musculoskeletal, ocular, gastrointestinal, and genitourinary systems**, as well as those residuals listed in § 4.88c.
