## Notes

- Note 1: Continue a 100 percent evaluation beyond the cessation of treatment for active disease. Six months after discontinuance of such treatment, determine the appropriate disability rating by mandatory VA examination. Any change in evaluation based upon that or any subsequent examination shall be subject to the provisions of § 3.105(e) of this chapter. Thereafter, rate under the appropriate body system any residual disability of infection, which includes, but is not limited to liver damage and bone marrow disease.
- Note 2: Confirm the recurrence of active infection by culture, histopathology, or other diagnostic laboratory testing.

## Understanding the Condition

Visceral leishmaniasis is an infectious disease covered under the VA's rating schedule for infectious diseases, immune disorders, and nutritional deficiencies. The VA rates this condition according to whether the disease is currently active, and it accounts for lasting effects that may remain after treatment.

## What the VA Looks For

**During and after active disease.** The VA continues a 100 percent evaluation beyond the cessation of treatment for active disease. Six months after that treatment is discontinued, a mandatory VA examination determines the appropriate disability rating. Any change in evaluation based on that examination — or any later examination — is subject to the provisions of § 3.105(e).

**Rating residual disability.** After the active-disease period, the VA rates any residual disability from the infection under the appropriate body system. Residual disability includes, but is not limited to, **liver damage** and **bone marrow disease**.

**Confirming a recurrence.** The VA confirms the recurrence of active infection by **culture, histopathology, or other diagnostic laboratory testing**.
