## Notes

- Note: Continue the 100 percent rating beyond the cessation of any surgical, X-ray, antineoplastic chemotherapy, or other therapeutic procedure. Six months after discontinuance of such treatment, the appropriate disability rating will be determined by mandatory VA examination. Any change in evaluation based upon that or any subsequent examination will be subject to the provisions of § 3.105(e) of this chapter. ## Understanding This Condition

Diagnostic Code 6014 addresses **malignant neoplasms (cancers) of the eye, orbit, and adnexa**, specifically excluding skin cancers. These are cancerous growths affecting the eye itself, the bony socket (orbit), and the surrounding structures.

Under the VA rating schedule, how this condition is evaluated depends on the type of treatment it requires and, later, on any lasting effects that remain after treatment.

### For Cancers Not Requiring Systemic-Level Therapy

For malignant neoplasms that **do not** require therapy comparable to that for systemic malignancies, the VA evaluates the condition differently. In these cases, the VA separately evaluates **visual and nonvisual impairment** — for example, disfigurement (rated under diagnostic code 7800) — and then **combines** those evaluations.

## What the VA Looks For

When rating this condition, the VA considers:

- **The type of therapy required.** A 100% rating applies when treatment is comparable to that used for systemic malignancies — such as systemic chemotherapy, X-ray therapy more extensive than to the eye area, or surgery more extensive than enucleation.
- **Duration of treatment.** The 100% rating continues beyond the cessation of any surgical, X-ray, antineoplastic chemotherapy, or other therapeutic procedure.
- **Follow-up examination.** Six months after treatment is discontinued, the appropriate disability rating is determined by a **mandatory VA examination**. Any change in evaluation based on that or any subsequent examination is subject to the provisions of § 3.105(e).
- **Recurrence or metastasis.** If there has been **no local recurrence or metastasis**, the condition is evaluated based on its residuals.
- **Residual impairment.** For cancers not requiring systemic-level therapy, the VA separately assesses visual and nonvisual impairment (such as disfigurement) and combines the evaluations.
