General Rating Formula for Diseases of the Heart

## Rating criteria

| Rating | Criteria |
| --- | --- |
| 100% | For an indefinite period from the date of inpatient hospital admission for initial medical therapy for a sustained ventricular arrhythmia; or, for an indefinite period from the date of inpatient hospital admission for ventricular aneurysmectomy; or, with an automatic implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (AICD) in place |

## Notes

- For DCs 7009, 7010, 7011, and 7015, a single evaluation will be assigned under the diagnostic code that reflects the predominant disability picture.
- Note: When inpatient hospitalization for sustained ventricular arrhythmia or ventricular aneurysmectomy is required, a 100-percent evaluation begins on the date of hospital admission with a mandatory VA examination six months following hospital discharge. Evaluate post-surgical residuals under the General Rating Formula. Apply the provisions of § 3.105(e) of this chapter to any change in evaluation based upon that or any subsequent examination.

# Sustained Ventricular Arrhythmias (VA Diagnostic Code 7011)

## Understanding This Condition

Sustained ventricular arrhythmias are a cardiovascular condition rated by the VA under **Diagnostic Code 7011**, part of the cardiovascular system rating rules found in **38 CFR § 4.104**.

This entry covers how the VA assigns a disability evaluation for a sustained ventricular arrhythmia, including situations that require inpatient hospitalization, ventricular aneurysmectomy, or the placement of an automatic implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (AICD).

## Available Rating Level

Under Diagnostic Code 7011, the following evaluation is defined:

### 100% Rating
A 100-percent evaluation applies in any of these circumstances:

- **For an indefinite period** from the date of inpatient hospital admission for initial medical therapy for a sustained ventricular arrhythmia; **or**
- **For an indefinite period** from the date of inpatient hospital admission for ventricular aneurysmectomy; **or**
- **With an automatic implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (AICD) in place.**

## What the VA Looks For

When evaluating this condition, the VA considers the following points:

- **Combined evaluation across related heart conditions.** For Diagnostic Codes 7009, 7010, 7011, and 7015, a single evaluation is assigned under the diagnostic code that reflects the predominant disability picture.

- **Hospitalization and surgery timelines.** When inpatient hospitalization for a sustained ventricular arrhythmia or a ventricular aneurysmectomy is required, a 100-percent evaluation begins on the date of hospital admission. A mandatory VA examination is scheduled six months following hospital discharge.

- **Post-surgical residuals.** Any remaining effects after surgery are evaluated under the General Rating Formula.

- **Changes in evaluation.** The provisions of § 3.105(e) apply to any change in evaluation based upon that six-month examination or any subsequent examination.
